A VISIT FROM BETH TRISSEL

What a pleasure to have one of the nicest people anywhere visit my blog. I've taken Beth Trissel's  online classes about herbs and heirloom flowers, and they've helped me in several books. She is a versatile lady and I am pleased to know her.

Thanks so much for having me on your lovely blog, Caroline. I’m excited to be back into time travels again.

The blend of history, mystery, fantasy, romance, and the paranormal were a fun meld to write in Somewhere My Lady (Book 1, Ladies in Time). I set the story in my home state of Virginia, as I have all my time travels thus far. Although, that’s not necessarily where the characters end up. I’ve written several time travels with the characters transported to the Scottish Highlands, but I am fully embracing my deep Virginia roots in this new release, book one of my Ladies in Time series, published by The Wild Rose Press. The following stories in the series will likely also take place in Virginia. My heart belongs here, especially the beautiful Shenandoah Valley.

Early spring in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia

I live in the valley on a farm that’s been in my husband’s family for several generations, but Somewhere My Lady unfolds in an 18th century manor along the James River. Harrison Hall, in the story, is fashioned after Shirley Plantation with elements of my father’s family home, a stately brick house, called Chapel Hill (circa 1816) located in the Southern end of the valley.

I’m fascinated with the past and enjoy researching different eras. Not only do I sometimes get plot ideas this way, but it helps me bring the story to life. I love old homes, have lived in several—do now—and often visited others. My father’s family homeplace is the inspiration behind many of the old homes in my stories. When I was a kid, I looked for Narnia in an ancient wardrobe there. Fortunately, I didn’t shut myself inside. C.S. Lewis cautions against that.

Research into family genealogy was the original inspiration behind my writing fiction in the first place. Before that, it was all nonfiction. I learned my ancestors arrived here in the early colonial days and left amazing accounts. One family line goes back to Jamestown, another to the Salem Witch Trials. My forebears were caught up in the French and Indian War, some taken captive and adopted into tribes, others killed, and some we don’t know what happened to them. Ancestors fought valiantly in the American Revolution, the Civil War…and left a rich legacy. Much fodder for the imagination.

Gardening is also a passion of mine, and one I inherited. I love to grow herbs and heirloom flowers with their fragrant connection to the past. I included a lovely garden in Somewhere My Lady, and used herbs in the story. Inhale deeply as you read.

Roses from Beth's garden

I should also mention my love of music. Edith's Theme, the hauntingly beautiful song from Crimson Peak, stirred my imagination long before I watched the movie, which was after I finished writing the book. Other songs in the soundtrack also sent my imagination soaring, but that one really did. Scenes took shape in my mind, especially the ghostly dance I wrote in chapter one.

REVIEW

"Somewhere My Lady is a fun supernatural romance that will have you slipping in and out of the past and future as if you were a spirit yourself.’’ ~Colleen’s Book Reviews

Story Blurb:

Lorna Randolph is hired for the summer at Harrison Hall in Virginia, where Revolutionary-War reenactors provide guided tours of the elegant old home. She doesn't expect to receive a note and a kiss from the handsome young man who then vanishes into mist.
Harrison Hall itself has plans for Lorna – and for Hart Harrison, her momentary suitor and its 18th century heir. Past and present are bound by pledges of love, and modern science melds with old skills and history as Harrison Hall takes Lorna and Hart through time in a race to solve a mystery and save Hart's life before the Midsummer Ball.

Excerpt:

Something about him held her spellbound…the tilt of his head, arch of his brow, glimpse of his profile… She followed his every move with the fixity of an owl.

He turned blue-gray eyes toward her and sensuous lips curved into a smile on his handsome face. Hands down. No contest. He was the hottest guy ever. Her heart beat a thrilling new rhythm.

He circled closer to where she stood rooted in the foyer, not moving a toe, scarcely drawing breath. Did he truly see her backed tremulously against the wall, or did it only feel that way?

Unlike the others in the ghostly assembly, his eyes didn’t skirt past her. He paused in the dance. Bending at the shoulders, he tipped his hand to her in a genteel flourish.

He’d freakin’ bowed. Her jaw dropped. He most definitely saw her. And she sure as heck saw him.

A sparking sizzle jumped between them, awakening her as she’d never been roused before. Even more than when the house charged through her at her arrival. It was as if she were plugged in—to him.

How that could be, she had no idea, but when he gazed into her eyes, time seemed to stop. She spiraled into moonless stars, and back again to this dizzying realm. To him. Even if she were dreaming, she’d never forget this moment.~

The rich history of Virginia, the Native Americans, and the people who journeyed here from far beyond her borders are at the heart of my inspiration. I’m especially drawn to colonial America and the drama of the American Revolution. And I love a good ghost story. CRIME AND CATNIP -- A NICK AND NORA COZY!

Cozy Mystery

Date Published: December 6, 2016
Publisher: Penguin/Berkley Prime Crime

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

CRIME AND CATNIP Blurb:

While catering a gala for the Cruz Museum, Nora Charles agrees to look into the disappearance of director Violet Crenshaw’s niece, a case previously undertaken by her frisky feline friend Nick’s former owner, a private eye whose whereabouts are also currently unknown.

As Nora and her curious cat Nick pull at the string of clues, they begin to unravel a twisted tale of coded messages, theft, false identities, murder, and international espionage. Nora dares to hope that the labyrinth of leads will not only help them locate the missing young woman, but also solve the disappearance of the detective. That’s if Nora can stay alive long enough to find him...

CRIME AND CATNIP Excerpt:

I twisted the knob and the door swung inward, almost hitting another furry shape crouched behind it. The cat that charged at me out of the darkness had a white body and an orange and white face. It’s fluffy white tail waved like a flag signaling surrender. It landed on all four paws and stood, back arched, bright blue eyes glittering.

“Yowl!”

I looked at Nick who’d sat back on his haunches and was calmly regarding the newcomer. “Is this what you wanted me to find, Nick? You wanted me to let this cat out of here?” I made an impatient gesture. “I told you I had things to do.”

I could swear that Nick shook his head. “Meeoow,” he yowled.

The other cat turned around twice, echoed Nick’s cry, and then shot like a guided missile back through the door. I peered cautiously inside. The room beyond was black as midnight, and I had no flashlight – nor did I have the cat’s extraordinary range of night vision. I felt along the wall and found a switch, which I flipped. Illumination revealed a flight of steps leading downward into what was most likely a basement or a storage area. Nick and the other cat were halfway down the stairs. Both paused, turned and looked at me and meowed plaintively.

“I do not have a good feeling about this,” I muttered. I cautiously crept down the stairway, emerging into what appeared to be the museum storeroom, filled to overflowing capacity with boxes, cabinets and trunks of varying sizes. I walked over to one and read the white and red printed label:

PROPERTY OF MEECHAM EXHIBIT

“Oh great,” I muttered. This was obviously the place where the packing was stored for the exhibit articles. The cats were dashing madly around the room – off to a large trunk on the left side, then back to me, around in a circle, and then back to the trunk. The orange and white cat began to mew pitifully as Nick chased a few red threads on the floor. Fighting the tingling feeling inching up my spine, I moved forward and saw a black Mary Jane dangling over the side, partially obscured by a swath of red satin.

With a sinking feeling, I walked all the way around, stopped and bit back a scream.

Daisy Martinelli sat sprawled in the trunk’s center, her neck cocked at a rakish angle, the red scarf tied around it pooled like a puddle of blood in her lap. One finger was caught in the scarf’s frayed edge, almost as if she were pointing. Her sightless eyes stared straight ahead, and a little bit of drool trickled out of the side of her mouth. Her arms were tangled in the folds of a scarlet cape looped carelessly around her shoulders.

I didn’t need to feel her pulse to see that she was quite, quite, dead.

Rats.

LUCKY CHARMED, 1ST IN NEW SERIES

LUCKY CHARMED
by
Sharla Lovelace

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Pub
Date: 7/18/2017

Charmed,
Texas, is as warm and welcoming as it sounds. But even in a small
town, when it comes to love, sometimes you’ve got to take the
bitter with the sweet . . .
Carmen Frost hates
honey. And bees. And in her hometown of Charmed, Texas, which
practically invented the stuff, that’s a problem. The good news is
that the summer Honey Festival is finally over. Even better, so is
the annual Lucky Hart carnival, a road show that made off with her
dreams years ago—including the boy she loved. Now she’s got a
divorce behind her, and a successful law career in front of her, but
in a tiny town, big memories die hard. Or they don’t die at all—as
Carmen discovers when she runs into an all too familiar pair of
eyes—older, wiser, and just as heart-melting as ever . . .
Sully Hart has had
enough of the nomad lifestyle. Travelling with his father’s
carnival gave him adventures, but it cost him much more. Now he’s
home to stay, contracted to create an entertainment complex in
Charmed. He wants roots, a house with a yard and all the mundane
pleasures that go with it. But the girl he loved has become a woman
who still wants freedom. Can she still want him? It seems he and
Carmen are at each other’s throats one minute—and on each other’s
lips the next. Someone’s gotta give . . .

BEGUILING DELILAH RELEASED!

Lyn Horner and I have been friends for many years. I'm pleased to have her as a guest on this blog. In my opinion, her Romancing the Guardian Series is very good. I've enjoyed traveling across the world in her stories and meeting interesting and well-developed characters.

He’s a Navajo sworn to bring her to America;
She’s a sexy genius in a race with him across France

Opening in Paris, the story whisks the pair in a life-and-death chase across France to Nice and Monte Carlo on the breathtaking Côte d’Azur.

Their journey is fraught with danger, excitement and steamy, mature romance. Will it lead to a second chance at love – if they live long enough?

BEGUILING DELILAH Excerpt
Leon thrust open the door to Delilah’s outer office and charged in. He tossed Esme a quick greeting as he strode to the inner door. She replied but didn’t try to stop him when he once again entered Delilah’s private office unannounced. He found her standing at a small open closet tucked in beside the wet bar in the corner.
“We must leave. Now,” he said the moment she turned to look at him. “The Hellhounds have come. They were at your condo asking for you.”
Her eyes widened. “How do you know it was them?”
“I know because at least one had a gun. Come, we must go. They might be on their way here right now.”
She made a choked sound, grabbed her coat from the closet and stuffed her arms into the sleeves. Snatching her handbag off her desk, she rushed over to him, breathing fast. Leon gripped her elbow and turned toward the door he’d left partway open. At that moment, a man’s voice sounded from the outer office. He spoke in French. Leon didn’t understand the words but caught his threatening tone.
Esme screamed and Delilah cried out, clutching Leon’s arm. Then her inner door was shoved open, banging against the wall. Three men barged in. Determined to protect Delilah, Leon circled his arm around her, slipping his other hand into his jacket pocket at the same time.
The shortest of the three, who had asked for Delilah at her condo, was apparently the leader. An ugly lantern-jawed tough, he reached under his coat and pulled out an automatic. Pointing it at Leon, he growled something in French.
“I do not understand your words,” Leon said mildly, “but I have no gun if that is what worries you.”
“Oh yes? Then show what you do have,” the man ordered in thickly accented English, indicating the hand Leon had stuffed in his pocket.
He nodded and obeyed. Extending his fisted hand, he uncurled his fingers to reveal a small pile of fine, dark powder lying on his palm. “This is only a calming medicine I sometimes use.”
Laughing, the Frenchman sneered, “You need calming now, eh, old man?” He waved his weapon at Delilah, causing her to gasp. “Release the woman. She is to come with us.”

Delilah trembled in fear. Would Leon meekly hand her over to the vile trio? Intending to resist, she tried to draw away from him, but his arm tightened like an iron band around her waist, holding her close. Seeing him bend his head, she thought he meant to inhale the calming powder but, instead, he blew it into the men’s faces.
The three inhaled sharply, choked, coughed and screwed their eyes shut. “What the hell?” The leader demanded in a strangled voice. Trying to blink the dust from his eyes, obviously unable to see, he waved his gun back and forth.
Delilah shrieked, certain he was about to shoot both Leon and her. But he didn’t get the chance. Clutching her arm, Leon hurried her past the blinded men and out the open door. She spotted Esme crouched on the floor behind her desk. Resisting Leon’s tug on her arm, she shouted, “Don’t cower there like a frightened rabbit, Esme. Come! We must escape!”
White with fear, the trembling girl rose and followed them. As the elevator doors opened, Delilah heard the three villains stumbling from her office, shouting furiously. Heart hammering, she dashed into the elevator with her companions and sagged in relief against the wall when the doors closed. Esme huddled in the corner, crying and shaking.
Leon laid his hand on the girl’s shoulder. “Calm down and look at me,” he said, drawing her tearful gaze. “When we reach ground floor, Delilah and I must run. But you should go to the security desk and ask the guard to call the police. Will you do that?”
“Oui, M-Monsieur,” the girl stammered, swiping tears from her cheeks. “But what if those terrible men follow you?” Esme glanced anxiously at Delilah. “Can you protect Madame Moreau?”
“We must leave the city for a while, but do not worry. I will keep her safe.”

Review extract from Tome Tender Book Blog:

“BEGUILING DELILAH by Lyn Horner is more than a steamy romance of passion, it is a mature romance between two people who are old enough to have faced losses and experienced life. Imagine being in a race to the finish, the prize being your life, but having the level of life experiences to enjoy the moments of obscurity when they come. Feel the beautiful countryside go by, sense the vastness of the Eiffel Tower and chuckle at the ways of a man who is used to living within his own world and having the traditional roles in a relationship.

Lyn Horner brings another Guardian into the game and creates the maze she must survive with her own personal “guardian” by her side! Passion knows no age, and great writing knows no limits!”

CHASING SHADOWS -- ROMANTIC SUSPENSE

Romantic Suspense
Date Published: June 13, 2017
Publisher: 5 Prince Publishing

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

CHASING SHADOWS Storyline:

Someone has decided to become the moral compass for the women in town, and now they're turning up dead. It will be up to Detective Lacy Pratt to find their killer before her relationship with Declan Matthews, brother to one of the victims, marks her as a target.

CHASING SHADOWS Excerpt:

Icy fingers of cold air pressed against Declan Matthews’ shirt as the wind blew through the trees. Once upon a time the wooded area, less than a mile from his childhood home, would have been a place of refuge. Now it was tainted with death.

The massive tree, which had been brought down by lightning at least fifty years earlier, still made for a perfect bridge over the cold brook that calmly passed beneath it.

It was there that they had found his sister. She had died on that bridge of nature, right where she’d once played as a child.

He heard the footsteps on the dry leaves behind him, but he didn’t turn. There was no reason to.
Vaughn moved in beside him, just as an old friend would do, without a word.

They’d shared many hours together in this spot. It was more than a tree in the woods. It had been a pirate ship, a lunar landing site, and a jungle with man-eating monkeys. It had also been a place to camp and have long talks. Or when they’d gotten older, a place to sneak off with one of their dads’ beers and a cigar. He’d brought Lacy Pratt out to the log once for a massive make out session, which ended successfully in his car later that night. Of course, that would only be the beginning of the women who refused to talk to him after a relationship ended.

Vaughn shoved his hands into the front pockets of his jeans and rocked back on his heels. “Christ, Declan. I don’t even know what to say.”
“There’s nothing to say.”

“I can’t believe something like this would happen here. Everyone knows everyone. Who could have done this?”

Declan hated the small town mentality, even if the town was no longer small, as it had been in his early youth. Small was why he’d moved so far away. Ask anyone in a small town who could have done something like murder a married mother of two, and they’d tell you no one. Give them a name and they’d give you a million reasons that person was a saint. He appreciated living in a big city where everyone was guilty of something. He was a lawyer, so he knew what he was talking about. He’d put enough deadbeats away for a long time.

He clenched his fists to his side. “People talk, V. Someone will spill and I’ll see them hang for it,” he said through gritted teeth. And he meant it. He’d found great restraint in his job, but this wasn’t part of his job. This was his little sister, and he’d take revenge if it meant finding the bastard that left her on that log, dead.

“Am I going to have to put a watch on you, Matthews?” The voice came from behind them and both men turned.

Of all people, Lacy Pratt moved toward them. A badge hung around her neck and a gun was holstered on her hip. She looked as if she’d walked out of a detective show on TV in her black slacks and starched white shirt. Her long locks, which he’d once tangled his fingers in, had been traded for a shorter cut that didn’t quite hit her shoulders.

As she moved closer, she tucked her hair behind her ear.

“I’m really sorry about what happened. Stacy was a vital part of our community and a good friend,” she said, her eyes locked on his.

He realized these were the first words she’d spoken to him in fifteen years. What a crappy thing to have to say.

“Thanks. What’s all this?” He nodded toward her badge and she looked down.

“Detective Pratt. I’m working the case.”

He felt those icy cold fingers on his back again, but this time the sharpness dug into his skin.
“How long have you been a detective?”

Lacy inched closer, her hands on her hips. “You got a problem with me and this case?”

“I have a problem with this case for sure.” He mimicked her stance. “But I don’t think that’s what I asked. I asked you how long you’ve been a detective.”

He saw the shift in her demeanor as her eyes softened. “Eight years.”

“Are you good at your job?”

Her eyes narrowed. “Damn good.”

“I’m glad to hear that. I want the S.O.B. caught and I want him to pay.”

NEW RELEASE, SNARE HIS HEART

I’m excited to announce my latest title, SNARE HIS HEART, is now available on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B073ZN4CCG. This is number 5 in my Loving A Rancher Series for Debra Holland’s Montana Skies Series for Kindle World. Whew! That sounds a lot more complicated than it is.

In addition to SNARE HIS HEART, eight other Montana Skies Series books are now released. TANGLED BLOOM is by Dallis Adams, SAVING THE OUTLAW is by Linnea Alexis, HEARTS RHYTHM is by Linda Carroll-Bradd, THE SCOUNDREL’S INCONVENIENT BRIDE is by Crystal Green, GIFTS OF LOVE is by Kit Morgan, REDEMPTION ROSE is by Louella Nelson, WHEN THE HEART HEALS is by Judy Pennell, and LEGACY is by Lynn Winchester. You can see the covers and purchase each book on Debra Holland’s website at http://www.debraholland.com/kindle-worlds.html

SNARE HIS HEART is set in 1887 in and near Sweetwater Springs, Montana Territory. Those of you who read Debra Holland’s books will recognize many of her characters in this story. My main characters are Forrest Clanahan and Addie Ryan, with Forrest’s stepbrother, Ethan Campbell, playing a large role. Here’s the summary:

How can Adeline “Addie” Ryan deal with pity and sly remarks after her fiancé elopes with her bridesmaid? Usually optimistic, she suspects this event will taint her socially as long as she remains in Atlanta. At her sister’s suggestion, she visits a matrimonial consultant. One man’s letter touches her heart, but can she travel to Montana Territory to marry a stranger?

Forrest Clanahan carries scars on half of his upper body he received when he tried to rescue his late wife from their burning home. Her death left a hole in his heart that won’t allow him to love again—but his children need a woman’s guidance and he needs a wife. He offers kindness and consideration—but not love. Never love.

Addie and Forrest unite against threats but can they develop a loving relationship?

Yes, this is another mail-order bride story. I love reading and writing about women who believe becoming a mail-order bride is the best or only opportunity left for them. Would I want to have been one? No, but who knows what we’d do if faced with difficult choices?

When many eligible men moved west, a surplus of marriage-age women were left behind. At that time in history, there were few options left for a woman who didn’t marry. She could become a companion for an elderly relative, become a governess if she was educated enough, or teach school (which required she remain single). Doing anything else lowered her social standing—if she had any.

I’ve read true stories of women who ventured across the country to marry a stranger they knew only by mail. Brides in some of these situations have tragic tales while others are happy—or at least contented. If you’re interested, Chris Enss published HEARTS WEST about several of these real-life mail-order brides.

Years ago, there was a man in our church who had at one time been handsome. A terrible car wreck left his lower face disfigured. Part of his jaw was missing and surgery had left vicious scars. When I first met him, I had to make a conscious effort not to stare at him. After becoming better acquainted with him, I stopped seeing the scars and deformed face. When my mom visited and asked me about the man in the choir who was so badly scarred, I had to stop and think who she could mean. When we take time to know someone, we see the person rather than only the exterior.

That’s what happens to Addie in SNARE HIS HEART. Once she comes to know Forrest, she realizes what an admirable person he is. Here’s an excerpt from SNARE HIS HEART:

As they drew closer, Addie was surprised at the size of the log home. The house was nothing like those she’d been accustomed to seeing in Atlanta. Although the size matched that of luxurious Georgia homes, large logs formed this one’s walls.
What an effort cutting, stripping and hauling all those logs must have been. How had they managed this large two-story home? She supposed the men had made the shingles for the steep roof, too.
A huge barn and several other buildings were near the home. Biscuits and Rowdy milled around the grounds and turned toward the wagon. Biscuits shaded his eyes as if watching them.
“That’s a beautiful home and large. How many bedrooms does it have?”
“Two downstairs, one’s for a housekeeper if we can ever afford one. The other is for older guests, say if your parents wanted to visit or when we get too old to climb the stairs. On the second floor, there are seven including ours.”
The number of rooms surprised her. “I suppose without a local hotel, you have to provide for travelers in the area. Do you have guests frequently?”
“Not since my wife died. Beg your pardon, I meant my first wife, Evie. Admit I’ve been a mite standoffish since the fire. Figure most folks won’t want to stay here bad enough to look at me in the bargain.”
She laid a hand on his arm. “Trust me, Forrest, I know how petty a few people can be, but you underestimate the largest percentage. Mrs. Norton told me you’re a fine man and a hero, so don’t you think others will feel the same way?”
He dipped his head. “No matter how they feel about my character, they won’t want to look at me. I don’t blame them. Shaving and combing my hair is a chore I’d like to avoid.”
“You could grow a beard.” She smiled.
His eyes sparkled with humor. “Pffft. On half my face? That’d look even weirder than now.”
“I’m more interested in the person than the appearance. I should explain now that I was engaged to a handsome and charming man. He left me at the altar and eloped with my bridesmaid. She had been—after my sister Julie—my best friend.”
“Ouch, that must have been a bitter pill to swallow.”
“Not as much as it should have been. What drove me out of Atlanta were the gossips. I simply couldn’t take the pitying glances or the spiteful glee from some of my so-called friends.”
“I certainly understand. Guess your bad luck was my good fortune.”
She touched his arm before she caught herself. “Oh, how nice of you to say that, Forrest. I hope you mean it.”
“I do. I’ve needed help and wanted a wife. Especially the girls need a woman to guide them but all three children need to be taught their lessons. I’ve tried but I’m so tired in the evening plus some days they’re in bed as soon as I come in and we eat. Winters I have more time indoors but chores have to be done year ’round.”
“I hope life will be better for both of us now.” And she still had a good feeling about the success of this adventure.

Congratulations again to Judy Loughman, who chose Adeline “Addie” as the heroine’s name. (In the same contest, Vanessa McBride chose Vanessa as the heroine’s name for an upcoming title.)

I hope you’ll read and enjoy SNARE HIS HEART and that you’ll love Addie and Forrest as much as I do. If so, please leave a review!

Book research often takes me to unique and interesting places, prompting me to ask questions that raise a few brows and might ping me on the National Security watch if I’m not careful. How much does a rifle kick? How far can a horse travel in one day? What kind of damage does a .40 caliber bullet do to a body? How long did it take wagon trains to cross the United States? When were grenades invented? How does one put on a corset? I’m a big believer in writing what you know, so I also like to experience what I write about to be able to better get into my character’s head. Such things take me much farther than putting together a play list. I know firsthand how much a rifle kicks, what a handgun does to a watermelon (yep, sorry, just a watermelon, I don’t get that immersed), how far a horse can travel in a day, and what riding that horse that far in a day does to one’s posterior. Which is not good, take my word for it.

But my favorite research has been on wineries, and the complexities of wine. When my character from the Emerald Belles series revealed to me that she dreamed of running a winery, I had to know more. A lot more. I’m lucky to live in a state that likes to boast about how it grows some of the best grapes in the world. While I’m not sure about that, I am sure that its rolling hills nestled at the base of the Cascade Mountain Range does indeed make conditions just short of magical for growing grapes. At the beginning of my research years ago, I was a sweet wine kind of gal who didn’t know the difference between chardonnay and merlot. Now not only can I tell the difference between pinot noir and pinot gris, but I know exactly what meal each would taste best with. I also learned that oak barrels vs. steel alter the taste considerably, as does the type of soil and water. And, I’ve found I enjoy coastal wines far more than those from inland vineyards.

Now, it’s rare for a sweet wine to make it into my basket. I’m always on the lookout for something new to try and I thrill at the challenge of figuring out what type of meal it would go best with. But wine goes with more than just a good meal, it also goes perfect with a good book. Pairing those two together has been the most fun yet!

May the road rise up to meet you . .

The Civil War has ended, but for
Corporal Patrick “Rick” Fergusson the battle rages on. Still
haunted by what he witnessed on the battlefield, the earnest Irishman

join him on the journey. But one client, a beautiful lady named Cat,
disturbs Rick’s newfound equilibrium.

High society widow Catriona O’Brian
is anxious to get to California, even if it means traveling with the
handsome corporal who seems to dislike her so. Cat no longer seeks
marriage; she has pinned all her hopes on making it to the west coast
and starting her own winery. Between the elements, wild animals, and
hostile natives, however, everything seems to be conspiring against
her. Time and again, Rick comes to her rescue. And soon, the
independent lass discovers that her biggest obstacle may be the
longing of her own traitorous heart . . .
